Low emissions are closely linked to stable production. When capacity is used efficiently and production runs smoothly, energy efficiency improves and emissions per ton are reduced.
“This result is especially meaningful because we reached a historic low level despite some fluctuations in production,” says Helena Kumpulainen, Environmental Director.
The reported COâ‚‚ figures cover the mill’s own process emissions, which fall under the EU Emissions Trading System.
Investments and Fossil-Free District Heating Key to the Result
The achievement is the result of long-term, systematic work, and targeted investments. Key measures include the introduction of a mechanical vacuum pump in 2019 and a reheating furnace burner upgrade in 2023.
In spring 2025, the Imatra site was connected to fossil-free district heating, enabling the controlled shutdown of the mill’s steam generation facility. These investments have significantly reduced the use of natural gas in the production process.
“Well-timed, major investments have played a decisive role. Shutting down the steam plant is clearly reflected in the emission level we have now achieved,” Kumpulainen notes.
Careful production planning and the effective use of raw materials have also been essential. Production is scheduled to make full use of available capacity and avoid unnecessary start-ups, while efficient use of raw materials directly reduces carbon dioxide emissions from the process.
“Yield is critical. The more efficiently different resources are used, the lower the carbon dioxide emissions per ton of steel,” Kumpulainen emphasizes.
Over the years, several smaller but important improvements have also been implemented, including more efficient use of facilities.
Work to Reduce Emissions Continues
Emissions reduction efforts will continue in the coming years. One key tool is Ovako Imatra’s participation in the national Energy Efficiency Agreement, which the company has been part of since the beginning and will continue to participate during the 2026–2030 period.
“There are many opportunities ahead—from improving yield and energy efficiency to replacing natural gas with renewable alternatives,” Kumpulainen says.
